Our Little Walrus Is Growing Tusks

Hayes' getting his first teeth. They are hard to see because they are just barely cutting through. In the pic, you can barely make out a little white tip on the right side. I felt them yesterday and they are definitely there. Not sure how long it takes for them to pop out totally. He does not let me look very well. Every time I try, he sticks out his tongue, He loves for me to rub his gums and he bites me. So cute. Can't believe that he is getting so big. Will be 7 months on Monday, Nov 23rd. (5 days)

Big Chair for a Big Man!

Hayes moved up to his big boy car seat today. He loves it, he sits up higher and can see out the window. We are about to take a BIG trip to Louisiana for Thanksgiving, so we thought he would be more comfortable for 20 hours in the car.

Pheonix

This is Hayes' new friend, Pheonix. He loves to watch the fish swim around.

What a Day!

Today has been quite a day. By 11am, I had already showed up late to take Hayes to a story time at the library with his friends Briley and Braxton. We showed up right as they were closing the last book. Oh well. Then we proceeded to go to Chic-fil-a and have our lunch. Well, Hayes wanted his lunch right away and could not wait until we got there (meltdown), so mommy proceeded to feed him in the car. Well, Chris will laugh at this because he thinks that I never put the top on anything after I use it, and if I do put it on, its not screwed on all the way or is screwed on crooked. I plead the fifth!!!! Anyways, I noticed that the bottle bag had flipped over while I was driving and I had forgotten to put the fancy bottle tops on with the disc to keep them from spilling and what do you know??????????????????? The formula spilled all over me, the car...............everywhere. I grabbed the other bottle and the same thing. I was so mad. Needless to say, even if the day started off a little rocky, we still had fun. Here are some pics from lunch after we pulled ourselves together.

Gymboree for Katelyn Ford's Bday 11.15.09

Today we had a blast at Katelyn's bday party at Gymboree. This was Hayes' first time to a birthday party and to Gymboree. His favorite part was the saucer. I put him in it and pulled him all over the gym. He just chilled and laughed. It was great. He also really liked the fun activities like playing on the mats with the other babies and singing to songs.

Meeting Mia 11/11/09

Hayes and I went to the mall yesterday to meet his new friend Mia. She is so tiny and so precious. 8 wks and 8lbs. I thought Hayes was small, but next to her, he's a giant. We had a great time. Missy (Mia's mom) and I had lunch and strolled around the mall with the kids. Good times!!!

Date in the Park

Hayes and I joined several of my girlfriends and their daughters this past weekend at the park. He was the only boy there with lots of girls. Poor little man.....way out numbered. We had a great time though seeing friends and his girlfriends from small group. Always good to get out and enjoy a beautiful day that God has given us.

I said, "No More Bottle, Mommy"

Hayes has recently decided that he would much rather eat solid food than a bottle. The doctor said that he has to at least get 16 oz a day of formula in addition to solid foods (that is a struggle). He will only drink his morning bottle and the rest of the day unfolds similar to this video here. He will take an ounce here and an ounce there throughout the day, but he is pretty much is the boss. You can see here that he pushes it away and makes silly faces. I have a very strong willed little boy. Most of you know that feeding has been an issue from day 1, he keeps me on my toes.

Funny Face

So this is Hayes' new face that he does all the time. The other night we discovered that if we did it to him, he does it back and keeps copying you over and over. Not sure where he came up with this face, but it makes us laugh all the time. I try to tell him, this is not the way to win over the girls, but he does not care one bit. He thinks it's so fun.

Scary Puppet

Hey,

So last week Hayes and I met Jessica from our small group and her son Braxton (1yrs) at the mall to go to a sing-a-long story time at Pottery Barn Kids. I was so cute bc the kids were all dressed up in their Halloween costumes and were so into it. Hayes was sitting in my lap and he was watching all the kids. The lady doing the story time started to walk around the room with this big green puppet and was making him sing to the group. When she got to our side, the puppet was right in front of Hayes and he let out this loud cry..... he was so scared of the puppet. It was so cute. He is so scared of the weirdest things and you never know when he will do it. It could be someone looking at him a funny way, a loud laugh, Chris's sneezes, loud music at weddings, etc. It is so cute when he does it bc his bottom lip just sticks right out before he starts to cry. These pics say it all. Jessica and I had a blast talking and getting to know eachother. Before it was all said and done, we had been walking around the mall with the kids in the strollers for about 4 hours. (The lip pics of Hayes are from a friends wedding, the others are from the mall) *He especially did not like sitting in the lap of the panda bear!!!! LOL!

The Grabber

Now that Hayes is 6 months, he grabs everything in sight. He does not care what it is, if he sets his eyes on it. He is going to try to grab it. This past weekend, I put him in his highchair to feed him and the doorbell rang. Not even one minute passed and when I returned from checking the door, he had rice cereal all over his face and even in his eyelashes. He decided since I had walked away, that he would grab the spoon and feed himself. Then yesterday he did it again. You would think that I would have learned my lesson. I went to ask Chris a question and when I came back, the rice cereal was on the floor upside down, the spoon was in his lap and he had smeared the prunes all over his face and the bib. I wish that I would have gotten a picture of that, but I will post one of him eating solids for the first time so you can get a good idea.

Another funny thing he does, it try to pet you. He will reach out and hold his hand against your cheek. You think that it is the cutest thing in the world until he takes your nose, cheek, eye...whatever he can get and pinches it really hard and then digs his fingernails in and pulls. OUCH! It is the craziest thing in the world and hurts so bad. I am having to tell him already that it is not nice to pinch and hit. He likes to hit too. Goodness....we are in for it aren't we.

Halloween 2009

We started off the fall season by visiting Burt's Pumpkin Patch in North GA. We went there to get the pictures with the giant pumpkins. We then went to Bradley's Pumpkin Patch. A small family owned farm that Chris and I had discovered last year when I was pregnant. We picked out our pumpkins and took Hayes on a hay ride through the family's property. Our neighbors, Steve, Stephanie and Brandon (3 yrs) joined us. Bradley's is known for their fried apple pie, but unfortunately we were too late and missed out this year. We proceeded to but the most disgusting pumpkin pie in the world. We think that the poor woman that made them used salt instead of sugar bc they were completely inedible.

On Hayes' first Halloween night, we dressed him as a skunk. Mimmie (my mom) walked around with us. It was rainy, so we just went to a few houses. We put him in the stroller and he had a miserable look on his face the entire time, like "what have you done to me?" It was hilarious. He used my pumpkin from when I was a little girl and got some yummy candy for mommy and daddy. LOL!

Reflux....The Silent Stalker

Well, it has been quite a long time, 6 months exactly, since I have written in the blog. Now that Hayes is a little more manageable, I think I can do this. An update on the last 6 months of our lives until this point...in a nutshell of course. I will go into detail about our struggles with Hayes' eating, reflux, eczema and colic in case my experience can help any of you. I reached out to so many of our friends that had gone through a similar experience, and it really helped to hear a different perspective and hear that I was not alone and the only one going through this with my child.

After the last post, when Hayes was 2 weeks old, he started showing signs of reflux and colic. Lets just say that he screamed through every feeding and would pretty much be uncomfortable and upset 24/7 for 12-14 weeks straight . During this time Chris and I tried absolutely everything to soothe him and find ways to help him and ourselves through this time. While it is all kind of a blur now, when you are dealing with a situation like that....you are completely overwhelmed. I felt totally alone and scared everyday. He cried everyday and I cried right along with him. There were times that I would just lay him down and just beg God on my hands and knees to step in and take care of him bc there was nothing left that I could think to do. I felt so bad bc Hayes was hurting and I could not do anything to make him feel better. Hayes did not have the kind of reflux that resulted in projectile vomit, he had the silient kind, severe heartburn and regurgitation. Unlike most reflux babies, he was not bothered in his sleep too much. Most babies do not like to lay down after eating, but for some reason, the relaxed state that he was in was helpful to him and he would eat fine during his night feedings, but from 9am to 8pm he was screaming and we had to force feed him every bottle. Whether that meant pacing the house, driveway, backyard, rocking him, etc- we had to find a way to get the food down or he would be deemed "failure to thrive". He also has eczema all over his body that we still battle with today.

He was not interested in breastfeeding and threw an absolute fit every time we tried, so we switched him to formula. (Similac Early Shield) We first tried breastmilk in a bottle and even mixing it with formula. He would do ok on a formula for a few days and then the cycle (extreme screaming, gas, constipation, arching back, straightening out entire body, thrusting head backward, swatting) would start all over again. (We also tried Similac Sensitive, Elecare, Nestle Good Start) We ended up on Similac Alimentum (hypo-allergenic) at 6 weeks of age. It is very expensive ($270 a month), but after jumping through some hoops, we got our insurance to pay for it. Turns out that Hayes has a suspected milk protein allergy and it was causing his system to have major turmoil. This is something that we hope that he will out grow. At that point we did not even want to try to figure out what in my diet was upsetting him, we just needed him to eat. Hayes would not drink the powder no matter what kind of water we tried (tap water, nursery water, Brita filtered water) I took him to two different pediatrician offices and saw 6 or so different doctors and they then referred us to a pediatric gastro. My mom even took us to visit a holistic chiroprator (Dr Hammer) in Atlanta, but that is another whole storyand a terrible experience all in itself. He was put on Zantac first and then Prevacid. We used Mylicon and Mylanta from time to time on top of that too. The first gastro (Dr Ifidike) did not help at all, it was not until we went to GI Care for Kids (Dr Liu) that we found a solution that would help him. The doctor suggessted that we give him his prevacid at night instead of in the morning, that it might be giving him a headache. Certain side effects can contribute to irritibility and cause the child to become even more upset and uncomfortable. The next morning, he was like a different kid. It was like someone flipped on a switch. It could have been coincidence bc he turned 3 months right around that time, but I don't think so. During that tough time, Hayes would not eat from anyone but me and that was very trying on me. Chris tried to help, but Hayes would fall asleep and he could not get him to wake up or he would scream to the point that the stress of someone else dealing with him was almost as worse. I had this overwhelming feeling of control sweep over me and felt that I had to do it all and was super woman. I quickly learned that my body was feeling the effects of the fact that I had been so emotional and stressed. I had only slept 2 nights in 4 months. I was feeling extreme dizziness and was showing all the signs of being pre-diabetic. The doctor ran a bunch of blood tests, only to find that everything came back normal . At 4 months Hayes started sleeping through the night. He would go from about 7:30-8pm to 6:00-7:00am depending. After I started getting sleep, all my ailments started to fade away. That is how valulble sleep is and how much your body can suffer without it. Through all of this, God showed me that I needed to let my loved ones help me and that what Hayes was going through was out of my control and that there was nothing that I was doing right or wrong that would change it. He still remains on the Prevacid. The doctor does not want to take him off until he is sitting up on his own.
